is a growing area, which will lay the ground for the future building of city districts in a modern and sustainable way.
Nordhavn is a part of Copenhagen situated at the coast of Øresund. It is built almost completely surrounded by the sea. It is easy to reach with public transportation. The district has its own station called Nordhavn Station. Furthermore, different busses have stops at the station and also closer to the tip of the area, which cannot be reached by train.
It served a practical purpose. The ship trade was very successful and grew rapidly at this point. To stay in competition with Hamburg there was a need for more space for the trades.
The area was built very fast, because it was seen as the key to success within ship trade around 1900. Therefore, Nordhavn was quite rare and rustic until the rebuild and rebranding plan was made in 2005. In 2008 it all began with a competition called: “The future’s sustainable city”. At this point the tone was set to change the area from being a practical and industrial harbor to becoming a modern and urban district of the city, which could benefit a greater amount of the Danish population as well as tourists.
Not only is it a sustainable district of Copenhagen, it is also one of the places where the cruise ships are allowed to dock. In addition it has become the vibrant, urban city district, which was the initial goal with the rebuilding and rebranding.
Amerika Plads, which is mainly apartments close to the sea. The area was drawn by the Dutch architect Adriaan Geuze. The vision was to create a space filled with life and inspiration.
Marmormolen has both apartments and ship trade. It is known for the beautiful architecture and especially the star shaped building. The apartments are by the inland waterways which is a lovely place to go for a walk
Århusgadekvarteret is the newest part of Nordhavn. This area houses 3.000 people and employs 7.000 people. Since a lot of people are moving around in this area every day, the main focus of Århusgadekvarteret has been to raise traffic safety in the area. This area is especially known for the rooftop outdoor gym called Konditaget Lüders. The gym is very recognizable with the monochromatic red colour palette.
Trælastholmen has not been built yet. It is situated at the tip of Nordhavn and the idea behind the area is to make more inland waterways, to create the feeling of being close to the water everywhere.
Levantkaj is the fifth and last sub district. Like Trælastholmen, Levantkaj is still waiting to be rebuilt. The idea is to change the area from industry to a natural city park. The international school (CIS) opened in 2017 with 1.200 students. The architecture of the school is supposed to underlie the future projects in the area.
